Would it be unChristian to suggest that we make an example of Pat or Jerry

(cross-posted from Christian Liberals/Progressive people of Faith forum)

According to beliefnet.com, the religious left is just as large as the religious right. We could prove it by persistently reminding Pat, Jerry, Dobson, or one of the other major figures on the radical religious right that they do not speak for us. Constantly calling their shows to argue with them, sending them loads of letters letting them know just what we think of them, and so forth. Keep the pressure on them, and let the rest of the country know that we are here, and we are not to be trifled with. It worked for the unions in their fight with Schwarzeneggar. It would also answer the persistent calls to "take back the faith" and give heart to every person of faith who does not stand with the hate-mongers. What do you think?

1. It would be even better to...
compare how much money the Christian Left spends on the poor to how much the RR spends on gay bashing and the like. -JJ

actually following Jesus, but what I am talking about is something sustained and overtly political ("taking back the faith" so to speak), which is why I asked if y'all would consider it unChristian and wrong.

There is biblical precedent in the prophets and in Jesus' disputes with the pharisees. They weren't afraid to take it straight to the religious hypocrites of the time.

6. It would actually be _the_ Christian thing to do.
Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and whoever that guy is when he's focussing on the family are basically the modern day Pharisees.

It would be right to call them and say "This is not what Jesus would have done," or "Jesus would not have said this."

Whatever happened to the WWJD campaigns of yore?

Mark.

7. Actually...
"Take back the faith" doesn't have to be "so to speak" it could be your BATTLE CRY. It's a good one. Focus on the the parts of the faith that the Right ignores. -JJ

8. Not likely to happen to any great degree...
Although there are exceptions, it's been my experience that, when push comes to shove, Christians of nearly every stripe tend to stick together, and are very good at keeping a public silence about the con-men and hatemongers in their ranks. You'll notice that it's almost always the secular media who focus on these problems.

The reason is, I think, that Christians are all playing the same scam to one degree or another. A few reap huge financial fortunes from it, most only get some imaginary comfort from it, but they all think they have something to lose if (so-called)Christians and Christianity are called to task.
