Panthers cut Delhomme in change of guard at QB
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Carolina Panthers cut Jake Delhomme(notes) late Thursday, just over a year after they gave him a lucrative contract extension only to watch him have his worst season as a pro.

Delhomme’s agent, Rick Smith, confirmed the move and said Delhomme would wait until Friday to talk to reporters. It signals the Panthers intend to go with Matt Moore(notes) or someone new at quarterback for the first time since Delhomme burst onto the scene in 2003 and led Carolina to the Super Bowl.

General manager Marty Hurney didn’t respond to numerous messages seeking comment.

Hmmm...didn't Michael Vick just say his dream team is Carolina? Are the Panthers that stupid?

1. I thought this would happen
Edited on Fri Mar-05-10 10:19 AM by JonLP24
Given how Matt Moore played last year. 1,053 yards, 61.6%, 7.63 YPA, 8 TDs, 2 Int.

Compared to Delhomme 2,015 yards, 55.5%, 6.28 YPA, 8 TDs, 18 Int.

Delhomme accomplished a lot in his time there and was un-drafted at that. He deserves a lot of credit for that.

2. Yeah, it's more likely they'll go with Moore than try and get Vick...
...just an interesting coincidence with Vick's comments a couple days prior to this.

3. They'll likely sign or draft a QB to go with Moore
So that isn't out of question. The 49ers have the Panthers first round pick so they could probably only get a decent backup from the 2nd round or lower rounds. Unless they find someone in FA that has starting experience it looks like Moore is their QB of 2010. Regardless of what anyone says Delhomme struggled and Moore played very well so this was going to happen.

7. Carolina doesn't have a first round pick to give up
Washington placed a first round tender on him meaning if a team wants to sign him then Washington has 7 days to match the offer or gain the team's first round pick. In Carolina's case San Francisco has their first round pick.

9. Thanks, Jon. I hadn't seen that. Kind of out of the loop the last week or so.
That said, I'm surprised the Redskins kept him. I really thought he wouldn't be around next year. I can't see someone giving a first rounder up for Campbell. Hmmm.

8. Panthers proved they could win with Moore down the stretch.
They probably should scout for a temporary backup. Not sure they need Vick.
