Montana and Rice top Most Valuable Draft Picks of All Time list...

Was ever really any doubt?

The NFL announced today the order of the Top 10 Most Valuable Draft Picks of All Time with some of the Top 10 in attendance at Radio City Music Hall, the home of the 2010 NFL Draft. Joe Montana, the 82nd pick of the 1979 Draft out of Notre Dame, is the Most Valuable Draft Pick of All Time. Jerry Rice, the 16th pick of the 1985 Draft out of Mississippi Valley State, is second, and Walter Payton, the 4th pick of the 1975 Draft from Jackson State, is third on the list.

1. According to fans...
though I think the results would be similar or close if just coaches and owners voted. Amazingly fortuitous they were drafted by the same organization a few years apart.

2. a rather stupid methodology -- how is their MV Draft Pick different from a MV Player?
"NFL.com editors narrowed down the first 74 Drafts to a list of the top 320 players, consisting of 10 players from each team. Fans began the process of determining the Most Valuable Draft Pick by choosing between pairs of players randomly generated from the list of 320 greats."

Brett Favre is in the top 7? He was drafted by the Falcons early in the 2nd round, and then traded to the Packers for a mid-first round pick. The Falcons used that to pick Tony Smith, who played two years, had 329 yards rushing, and fumbled more frequently than he found the end zone. So how was Brett Favre a valuable draft pick?

3. It works if a player spent most of his career with the team that drafted him
Your point is well-taken in the case of Favre

5. I'd say that the most valuable draft pick was Herschel Walker
The Cowboys picked him up in the 5th round in 1985, got two pro-bowls out of him in three-and-a-half seasons, before the blockbuster trade that enabled the Cowboys to get Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, Russell Maryland, et al.

12. If that's true...
how do you reconcile your claim that Dallas is "America's team", with the Cowboy greats losing what you charge is essentially a popularity contest?

13. Dallas As "America's Team" Has Always Gotten Under My Skin
And the claim that it would NFL Film's idea is fraudulent. If anyone thinks it wasn't Tex Schramm's plan, they need to do some more detailed research.
