"You're a liar," Gray said to Pavin. "You're going down."
KOHLER, Wis. — Another day at the 2010 PGA Championship, and still another controversy involving Tiger Woods.
Only this time, Woods had nothing to do with the firestorm about his potential spot on the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Captain Corey Pavin kicked off Wednesday by denying a Golf Channel report saying that he'll select Woods as a captain's pick for the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

On Tuesday, the Golf Channel's Jim Gray reported that Pavin said he would select Woods, should the world's top-ranked player not qualify on points.

Wednesday morning, Pavin, through his Twitter account, said that he was misquoted, posting: "For the record, @golfchannel and Jim Gray has misquoted me re: picking Tiger. I never said such a thing and will not say a thing until 09/07."

Sept. 7 is the day Pavin plans to announce his four captain's picks to fill out the 12-man U.S. team. The eight automatic qualifiers will be determined Sunday after the conclusion of play at Whistling Straits. Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan are the only Americans who have clinched spots.

......"I had a conversation with Jim Gray yesterday just outside the locker room near where we registered and he asked me a few questions and his interpretation of what I said was incorrect," Pavin said. "There's nobody that's promised any picks right now. It would be disrespectful to everybody that's trying to make the team. I've got quite a few people I'm looking at. I would not disrespect any of the players that are potential players on the team, and obviously there was a misinterpretation of what I said, and that is an incorrect quote."

Gray, according to the Golf Channel's website, said he stands by the report and did not misquote Pavin. He reported Pavin on Tuesday as saying, "Of course, I'm going to (pick him). He's the best player in the world."

Gray confronted Pavin following the news conference. In an eyeball to eyeball conversation, Gray actually stuck his finger in Pavin's face in a heated conversation, according to USA TODAY golf writer Steve DiMeglio.

"You're a liar," Gray said to Pavin. "You're going down."

1. Well, the story i read said Pavins' wife told USA Today she heard the reporter
call him a liar...kind of a third-hand report...in any case, amusing that there's a catfight in golf.
