Poll question: Whose choke job was uglier? Yankees or Phillies?
Edited on Sat Oct-08-11 01:24 PM by KamaAina
I'm going with the Phillies, because a) at least the Yankees lost to another division champ, not some wild-card team that sleazed in on the last day of the season, and b) at least they didn't get shut out at home in a deciding Game 5.

edit: Be that as it may, the best teams in both leagues ate it in the first round. This is getting more and more like the NCAA tournament where it's common to watch a 3 seed play a 5 for a regional title. :eyes:

1. I just can't call it a choke when it is only a five game series and it goes the distance.

2. I'd still do the Red Sox at the top, then Philly, but it's close...
The Yankees didn't choke...anyone paying attention this season should not have been surprised they went out early..grateful, yes, but not surprised.

4. Not really a shock for the Yankees to lose to Tigers, who were Central champs.
Pretty surprising for Phillies to lose to Cards, who got in as wild card last day of season.

BUT, both the Tigers and Cards were red hot late (Tigers won 36 of last 54). Doesn't matter anymore, now. Hoping for a Fall Classic, and another Tigers-Cardinals World Series!

7. Be careful what you ask for. You may get it.
The last time the Tigs had a team this good, they made it all the way to the Series -- only to blow it to a mediocre NL team that was only a handful of games above .500.

That team was, of course, the Cardinals. :scared:

8. It's OK, I remember 1968. You can look that one up. Cardinals then, too.

5. Phillies. The hype was there regarding their starting pitchers
and media were predicting they'd win it all. In a waltz.

Well, as NY Giants football coach Tom Coughlin has said: "Talk Is Cheap. Play The Game"

13. As a Philadelphian and a Phillies fan, I would like to....
wish all the teams left in the competition the very best of luck. May they all be at their best, so the games are exciting and rewarding for those of us who watch.

14. I despise the Cardinals, but I loved both choke jobs equally!
OK. So, yeah, I like the fact that the Yanks are out a little more.

Still, even though the Brewers probably won't get by the Cardinals, they have a better chance than they would have against the Phillies.

15. I picked the Phillies
but only because a Yankee choke job is always a thing of beauty.

16. The Phillies go into sustained slumps from time to time every year.
When they hit, everyone hits. When they don't hit, no one hits. That isn't to say they did not live up to the hype because they didn't. Did they choke at the plate? Yeah. But I don't think Halladay choked, Hamels pitched well, if any pitcher choked it was Lee giving up a four run lead in Game 2. You could see it coming. They should have just played their scrubs in the last series and let Atlanta get in.
