Did the Chargers get fucked or what??
And by probably the best ref in the NFL, Ed Hochuli. It was a fumble, my poor eyesight confirmed it from 1,600 miles away. I guess the football gods look favorably upon jerks like billicheck and shanahan.

2. The ref should be suspended and fined.
Horrible call...

3. Such a horrible call and why not obvious to those on the ground?
Is Hochuli too proud to have a bad call overturned? I'm all for fines and suspension.

4. But that's the problem - it couldn't be overturned.
"Play to the whistle" - the play ends when the whistle blows, otherwise you invite a lot more injury opportunities into the game.

Yes, Hochuli messed up, he should have seen that it was a fumble, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

5. The refs are told to let the play continue and not be so quick to blow the whistle.
Evidently, Hochuli was busy pumping iron when they discussed this item in the NFL Officials meetings.

10. That's the puzzling aspect
They've been emphasizing a slower whistle for a couple of years, to prevent what happened today.

11. Actually that doesn't apply when the quarterback fumbles
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/09/15/Week2/2.html

"Whereas rules now call for action to continue on a play when a rusher or receiver fumbles and has an inadvertent whistle blow, the rules for a quarterback and a pass play are different ... in part because the Competition Committee does not want to see quarterbacks flying around in piles, risking injury diving for loose balls."

7. You could see why he thought it was a pass.
When it squirted out of Cutler's hand he went through the throwing motion and hit the ball again. The ref thought it was incomplete. Considering his angle, he made what he thought was the right call. However, the rule is stupid. After the review they should have just given possession to the Chargers at the spot of the dead ball. But that isn't the way the rule is written and so, the Chargers got hosed.

8. Ed Hochuli is NOT the best ref by a long shot
He is a prima donna that enjoys being in the spotlight and making himself and his crew to much a part of the game.

13. That was the second bad call against the Bolts.
There was a supposed interception that couldn't be reviewed because the replay equipment was down.

You see why I like baseball so much better?

14. The Bolts could still be one of those rare 0-2 teams to make the playoffs though.
They're still good enough to recover from this, as long as they keep their heads together. Two tough loses can mess with you, but I see them handling it.

As for baseball, they have more than their share of crap calls too.

Nice grab!

Yer out!

15. Hey Boss...I agree with you on something!
Apparently the ref is being downgraded...not sure how all that system works, but I guess this happening is serious for him.

17. Chargers got a break week before....
Rivers was clearly across the LOS when he scrambled and passed on third down. Carolina challenged, call stands, first and ten. Next play, long bomb for a TD. Ultimately didn't win them the game, but it was still a terrible call that directly affected the score.

So I'd say the football gods have a terrific sense of humor.

21. That's not what was challenged.
Rivers possibly being past the LOS when he threw the ball wasn't what was reviewed. What was reviewed was whether the receiver caught the ball.
