Check out this heartbreaking email that just landed in my inbox
(Excepts from a letter from an experienced teacher in Riverview Gardens, Missouri. It is a mostly poor African-American inner suburb just to the North of St. Louis. The School District was recently taken over by Missouri state education officials after they declared the district "unaccredited")

"what's going on with Riverview Gardens. I'm now unemployed due to the state takeover and all teachers have had their tenure taken away. Most of us don't know what's going to happen-we're all confused, frustrated and deeply hurt about all of this....staff has not been interviewed, principals have been either fired, transferred and/or retired, etc...We have little or no union strength and the list goes on...As a professional, could you tell me how this happens to good teachers who have worked very hard, not missed work, (sick days may be taken away, etc..we really don't know...)and performed above and beyond expectations? Our nurses have been fired, only to be replaced with nurses aids....

There are so many people who are afraid to go to the media about this because they don't want their careers placed in jeopardy"

The superintendent in this district was recently convicted of fraud and embezzlement.

3. It is because they have failed us all!
This is going to hurt me more than all you teachers, but I'm going to have to fire you all and replace you with low paid noobs because they won't be tainted with the stain of aft-ness. We plan on closing these failing schools down and shipping all that sweet public cash...er... I mean we plan to reallocate resources to the cheapest....um I mean the finest schools we can build....that will still leave us a major profit....um I mean major opportunities for the kids!

That is what it is all about people. Not you or your pension, it is about the children...and major profits OMG I'm so giddy with greed! Oops, did I say that out loud?

With love, Arnie
