My first sermon of 2009 is entitled "Why I Chose to Be a Heterosexual."

Every January, my congregation renews its commitment to being a Welcoming Congregation within the UUA.

One of the posts I saw here yesterday (and can't find again, someone help!) inspired my approach.

I will be talking about the ludicrous, yet dangerous, nature verses nurture debate regarding homosexuality. This is the only way traditional religion can justify its consistent oppression of homosexuals. Making sexuality a matter of choice removes it from the goodness of God's creation or the natural state of being in our Universe. By turning the argument on its head maybe others can see how truly absurd..and devastating... this debate really is.

I was also inspired by John Barrowman's episode of the BBC's "The Making of Me." If you haven't seen it, it's on YouTube in six parts. It's fantastic and actually helped me with a religiously conservative relative lamenting the discovery of having a gay child. It really is amazing what kind of healing can begin when this whole "choose to be gay" lie is obliterated.

I just tell them to go into a room by themselves...

...close your eyes...

...forget the world around you....

...you are in your own little world and nobody is near you...

Now imagine giving oral sex to a person of the same gender. Think about it for a while. A good 3 minutes. Now freeze your face.

Open your eyes.

Look in the mirror.

If your facial expression looks like this: You are a heterosexual. Deal with it. You're cool in my book.

If it looks like this: You are homosexual or bisexual. Deal with it. You're cool in my book.

...but I'm very cool with anyone whose look would be the second.

As Catholics who've actually READ the Bible, we follow what Jesus said and we Love our neighbors weather they're straight, gay, bi or whatever. Anybody who goes through their life without inflicting intentional harm on others deserves to be happy with who and what they are.

There are MANY gay or lesbian people or couples whom we'd GLADLY let watch our 8 year old son. There are a lot more fundies that we wouldn't allow within a country mile of him.

14. As a jaded Catholic/Agnotic I have to say it's folks like you that make me not hate the church

as a whole. More than I can say for one DUer whom I loathe...the kind of nonbeliever who takes times to insult anyone with an kind of faith and then turns around and whines about being persecuted as a nonbeleiver.

Yeah my look is the first too. Sorry theorists that say that befriending and respecting gay folks will make you gay. I am quite all about the ladies (or lady as I am quite happily maried these days and hopefully forever!)
