Gay couples protest bill to ban adoptions
Gay couples protest bill to ban adoptions

(Frankfort, Kentucky) LGBT rights groups and child advocates are denouncing legislation that would bar gays and lesbians from adopting or fostering children in Kentucky.
The bill would reject any unmarried couple from adopting, but opponents say it is aimed squarely at gays.

On Wednesday, close to 200 people demonstrated against the measure at the Capitol, calling the legislation “a hate bill.”

The LGBT civil rights group The Fairness Campaign organized the rally.

Among those who took part were Anthony Harland-Bennett, his partner and their 7-year old daughter. Harland-Bennett told The Associated Press that they adopted their little girl when they lived in Wisconsin, but now that they have moved to Goshen, Kentucky they may have to leave the state out of fear their daughter could be taken from them.

2. I have never understood the idea that no parents are better than 1 parent.
Do these people not know how many kids are waiting for adoption in the state foster system? Disgusting!

3. And unlike most straight couples....
Gay couples have little problem adopting children who are a different race than them or who have special needs such as autism or Downs. Such children typically languish in the foster care system or in institutions because no one else wants them.

I agree: this is a hate bill, not one that has the children's best interests in mind.

7. I know. I work in foster care. It is sad how many kids
sit in the system for years... I would encourage anyone who is able and who has thought about becoming a foster parent to look into it. I became a foster and adoptive parent several years ago. It was the best choice I ever made.

4. so if you're a single parent and you are gay
they take away your kid?

Howzat work for natural spawning of offspring?

Also, what if you're only gay on Tuesdays? Can you adopt on the other days of the week?

Do these gay hatin' people know how stupid they are?

5. Federal Law
I understand that adoption is a state issue, but there is a sufficient national interest in protecting children that such state-based hate laws be overruled by federal legislation. The vast majority of Americans are understanding of the need for both foster parents and adoptive parents.

6. So many natural parents in this state
that absolutely should have never had children. For a while it seemed that there was a new instance of a child murdered by a family member or "mother's boyfriend while she was at work" just about every week in the paper. There was an horrific case in Winchester, Ky where the Dad and his girlfriend literally tortured a 7 year old girl to death, they scalded her in hot water, beat her, and threw her down stairs. I am sure no one ever questioned if that Dad should have a biological child, or if his live-in was worthy of being a parent, they were heterosexual, they had to be great parents according to right-wing religious political action committees that control the minds of many Kentuckians (commonly called Fundamentalist Churches).

I am disgusted beyond reason that good people could be eliminated as potential adoptive parents just because they are gay when the most wretched examples of human beings can have biological children at will, or move in with someone with a child and go on to kill it the first chance they get. Adoptive parents are at least screened to make sure they aren't nuts! Fundy political action committees in my state have already done such harm, I hope they can be stopped before they do more damage to our morality.

There is a big problem with people if they can't see the irony of this.
