GLAAD disappointed with ABC’s statement on “down low” comment

ABC issued a statement regarding the controversial comments on HIV/AIDS and the Black gay community that were said on The View.

On June 22, D.L. Hughley guest hosted The View. Conversation turned to the topic of HIV/AIDS transmission, and Hughley said, “When you look at the prevalence of HIV in the African-American community, it’s primarily young women who are getting it from men who are on the down-low.”

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) took out a full page ad in Variety Magazine against Hughley’s statements and called on ABC to apologize and issue an on-air correction to what GLAAD called a misconception.

An excerpt of the ad read, “The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has publicly disproven this myth. And since June 22, thousands of people have written to ABC, asking that The View provide correct information to viewers. Unfortunately, those requests have been greeted with silence from both ABC and The View.”

5. The facts are a straight male has sex with a large number of females

One of them gives him HIV and then either because he doesn't know he has it or because he doesn't care, he continues to have sex with a large number of females. The idea that the high rate of HIV in the black community is caused by "secret gays" only encourages straight african americans males not to get tested and ends up contributing to the problem.
