Anti-GLBT former state legislator (IA) does 180° turn on marriage equality
"As a conservative Republican supporting marriage equality, former state Sen. Jeff Angelo acknowledges he is swimming against the GOP mainstream in partisan-infested waters.

Angelo, a three-term senator who once led a legislative charge to declare marriage as only between one man and one woman in Iowa, stood alone outside the Statehouse today (Wednesday, June 1) to launch a new group called Iowa Republicans for Freedom that will attempt to “change the hearts and minds” of conservatives currently opposed to same-sex marriages by convincing them such a position runs counter to their “bedrock” GOP values and beliefs.

“I believe that some folks get so passionate about keeping marriage exclusive between a man and a woman that they’re stomping all over principles that normally they would defend in the public square – individual freedom, limited government, the pursuit of happiness,” he said. “So what I’m doing is I’m calling conservatives back to their conservative roots and saying that it is in line with our principles to support marriage equality.”"
