Homeless LGBT Speak Out in "Once You Were Set Free"

NEW YORK - Brooklyn-based non-profit NY Writers Coalition (www.nywriterscoalition.org), one of the nation’s largest community based writing organizations, announced a series of Pride Month initiatives to spotlight the talented voices of its LGBT writers. On June 15 2011, NYWC will publish Once You Were Set Free, a book written by homeless LGBT youth attending Ali Forney Center’s CAMP day center.

NYWC will also produce a special LGBT Writers issue of its online literary magazine Dig Deep and NYWC’s Pride Month celebration will culminate in a unique inter-generational reading on June 23 sponsored by SAGE, pairing LGBT elders with homeless LGBT youth, curated by queer poet and NYWC workshop leader Tamiko Beyer (bough breaks).

"Over the past 6 years, we have been lucky enough to write with some amazing LGBT writers in our workshops. The release of Once You Were Set Free offers a rare chance to read the work of an unfortunately growing number of them: LGBT homeless youth," said Aaron Zimmerman, Executive Director of NYWC.

"The poems and stories by these incredible writers will inspire you, and break your heart. It is impossible to read this work without feeling moved by these too-often forgotten young people facing tremendous challenges every day. "

"The poems and stories by these incredible writers will inspire you, and break your heart. It is impossible to read this work without feeling moved by these too-often forgotten young people."Once You Were Set Free, written by homeless LGBT youth attending Ali Forney Center’s CAMP day center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, will be published on June 15. The poems and stories in Once You Were Set Free are a snapshot of the talent, hopes, dreams, heartbreak, and stark reality of young people facing lives rarely written about so beautifully.
