White House Statement on NY; Mayor Bloomberg's Comments
"The President has long believed that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights and legal protections as straight couples," White House spokesman Shin Inouye said. "That's why he has called for repeal of the so-called 'Defense of Marriage Act' and determined that his Administration would no longer defend the constitutionality of DOMA in the courts.

"The states should determine for themselves how best to uphold the rights of their own citizens," he said. "The process in New York worked just as it should."

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the passage of the legislation was "a historic triumph for equality and freedom."

"New York has always been a leader in movements to extend freedom and equality to people who had been denied full membership in the American family," Bloomberg said in a statement. "By welcoming all people -- no matter where they are from, what faith or philosophy they follow, or whom they love -- New York became the strongest, most dynamic city in the world. And today, we are even stronger than we were yesterday."

2. Why do we have a federal constitution with a bill of rights?
After all, if the President believes, "The states should determine for themselves how best to uphold the rights of their own citizens," maybe we don't need a set of documents to insure equal rights across all the states. Maybe each state should consider individual rights independently. :sarcasm:

That statement, if really from Obama, is the most discouraging comment I have heard from him, even though it is in the context of a victory for equal rights for one of our most harassed groups. No wonder women's rights are being taken away state by state with no resistance from the federal government.

Human rights should not be determined state by state. If it is a RIGHT, it should be equal across ALL our states.

3. The Lagger and the Leader
Obama does not even hold to this alleged principle of States deciding best, this is a special case, Medical Marijuana States should not expect this to apply to them. This is for 'those people' only, not for treatment of regular citizens or other rights. That is, it is bullshit.
