Houston megachurch pastor Joel Osteen may be known as the purveyor of a “Christian-lite,” feel-good gospel, but he stands squarely with hard-line conservatives on homosexuality.

Tuesday on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, the host asked Osteen (pictured) if his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage had changed since he appeared on the program in January, when he characterized being gay as sinful. The minister replied that they never have and never will.

“Mine’s based out of the Scripture. That’s what I believe that the Scripture says, that homosexuality is a sin,” he said.

Morgan, describing Osteen as a “progressive preacher,” asked him, “Shouldn’t the Scripture be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age?” Osteen replied, “I can’t see how you would change that. ... Two hundred years from now, the Scripture’s still gonna say that.”

While Osteen generally avoids dealing with divisive issues such as LGBT rights and abortion, the idea that he is progressive is definitely questionable. In 2009 he famously said, “Homosexuality is not God’s best.” He later attempted to soften the comment by saying, “I don’t think it’s God’s best for your life.”
