Anti-Gay Judges On Shortlist To Replace Miers
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/10/102705miersFolo.htm

The guessing game has begun into who President Bush will nominate to replace Harriet Miers after she withdrew her Supreme Court nomination on Thursday.

The White House is remaining tight lipped, but the Associated Press has released a list of names it believes is on Bush's shortlist.

Following Miers' announcement she with withdrawing her nomination LGBT civil rights groups called for a replacement nomination that was more balanced. (story) Nevertheless, the AP list includes at least four names of people with records opposing LGBT civil rights.

2. Bad as Miers was, its only going to get worse.....
At least with her, there was some small chance she'd wind up like Souter. With these guys, there is no hope whatsoever.

And one of them will wind up on the Supreme court.

3. Oh, it's bound to get worse
and in the meantime, we'll find out just how strongly our allies will help fight for our rights.

Frankly, the American people should be utterly appalled that these wingnuts have taken control of our nation, using a tragedy like 9/11 to spread their fear, deception and violence against gays across the nation like a cancer.

These are not people who have sincerely or deeply-held beliefs beyond the need to demonize others in order to feel secure. They may believe they are destined to enter a kingdom, but it most certainly will never be one of heaven.

4. Huh?
In all honesty, wtf makes anyone *feel* safe about Miers politics or legal theory (legal philosophy) once on SCOTUS?

Really now!

Miers may have demonstrated a "Christian" charitable view in some of her past actions. She may have been demonstrating this view and manner in her workplace at times as well as in the general community while in Texas.

However, there's a hell of a canyon between voluntary charitable deeds versus permanently cementing mandatory due process rights and equal protection rights in law as to GLBTs. I feel -- yes, it's my opinion -- that Miers may have been "charitable" toward the gay community at times, but I doubt very strongly that she would have cemented those actions into protective laws through SCOTUS decisions. This voluntary charity thing is classic conservative Republican modus operandi.

Thus, the GLBT community and those who support them shouldn't feel a cold draft when Miers "withdrew" her nomination.

On the other hand, GWBush's I-am-not-showing-my-cards-but-trust-me-because-Miers-is-a-Christian religious test that Bush's uber-rightwingnuts didn't accept, set in place (quite stupidly on his behalf) an acceptable manner to reject future nominees. Think about it. Bush has paved the way that progressives can reject his next SCOTUS nominees. Hopefully, Democrats and moderate Republicans can muster a backbone in the Senate!
