President Barack Obama on Tuesday backed adoption by gay men and lesbians in a proclamation declaring November National Adoption Month.

“As a Nation, one of our highest responsibilities is to ensure the health and well-being of our children. With generous hearts and open minds, we strive to make sure all children grow up knowing they have a family that shares with them the warmth, security, and unconditional love that will help them succeed. And yet, more than 100,000 children in America await this most basic support, and still more children abroad live without families. During National Adoption Month, we celebrate the acts of compassion and love that unite children with adoptive families, and we rededicate ourselves to the essential task of providing all children with the comfort and safety of a permanent home.”

“With so many children waiting for loving homes, it is important to ensure that all qualified caregivers are given the opportunity to serve as adoptive parents, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or marital status,” the president wrote.

Last week, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced she would introduce a bill to bar discrimination against gay couples who want to adopt.

McCain Caves To Right Wing On Gay Adoption, Says Orphans Shouldn’t Have Gay Parents
By Satyam Khanna on Jul 27, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Earlier this month, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) took an extreme position on gay adoption, telling the New York Times he believes in “traditional” families even if it means leaving children in orphanages. “I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no I don’t believe in gay adoption,” he said.

But in follow-up statement, McCain aide Jill Hazelbaker backtracked, stating, “McCain could have been clearer.” She added that the senator would support gay adoption if there were no alternative:

However, as an adoptive father himself…he recognizes that there are many abandoned children who have yet to find homes. McCain believes that in those situations that caring parental figures are better for the child than the alternative.

Interviewed on ABC today, however, McCain reverted to his original radical position, telling George Stephanopolous that he does not support gay adoption in any circumstance:

The 2012 candidates -- What they're saying...

Below is an alphabetical listing of the leading contenders for presidential election of November 2012. In some cases, the candidate has not formally announced but is generally considered to be among those seriously considering a run for the Oval Office. If a candidate states publicly that he or she will not be running in the 2012 campaign, their information will be removed from this listing.

The information contained herein has been gleaned, in some cases, from a candidate's website (if it exists), but primarily from news reports (links are included where appropriate). We have chosen to focus on seven issues we feel are of critical importance to our readers: (1) abortion, (2) the economy, (3) same-sex "marriage," (4) homosexuals in the military, (5) national security, (6) Israel, and (7) illegal immigration.

2. Isn't this putting the cart before the horse?
Married couples have a much easier time adopting than single people do.

3. And yet he opposes marriage equality, so he backs allowing
kids to suffer for the sake of his fantasy about Sanctity and his insistence that only straights have a 'spiritual element' to their relationships? How odd, how selective, in fact, how contradictory.
Equal is equal and equality is the only starting place.
