Top "Gay-Friendly" and "Gay-Unfriendly" US Companies, 2011

With marriage and its accompanying benefits unavailable to same-sex couples in most states, national companies choose whether or not to provide certain benefits to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) employees and their partners. Every fall since 2002, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has released its Corporate Equality Index (CEI) with ratings of Fortune 500 companies (among other large national businesses) as they relate to LGBT employees.

HRC rated 615 businesses in 2011. The average score was 87%. (See the 2004 HRC ratings for comparison.) Ratings were based on partner benefits, respectful marketing, diversity training, and responsible citizenship, among other factors (see methodology 3.2 MB ). We labeled companies with a 100% rating "gay-friendly" and companies with a 0% rating "gay un-friendly."

4. Family Dollar and Dollar General suck, anyway
Dollar stores with merchandise costing way more than a dollar...that gives you an idea of their ethics.
