Paul Martin on Same Sex Marriage

C-span is showing an interview with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. The reporter asked him how he can be a practicing Catholic yet support same sex marriage. They way he phrased his answer really should be what the Democratic party should aim for here at home.

This isn't word for word but basically, he said that he is a devout Catholic and gay marriage is against the teachings of the church. He then said that because not all people agree with his faith, he will not force people to agree with his idea of marriage with the hopes that another government in the future will not take away his right to be a Catholic.

If we can teach the American people that the separation between church and state protects their right to be religious, we can get the public on our side.
