Subject: Frist Announces Marriage Amendment Is A Top Priority In New Congress

Senate Leadership Announces That AFM's Marriage Protection
Amendment Is a Top Priority for 109th Congress

Decision of Senate Majority Leader Frist To Sponsor AFM's Marriage
Amendment (S.J. Res. 1) As a Top Legislative Priority for the Senate
Contradicts Predictions Of Post-Election Leadership Retreat

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Alliance for Marriage welcomed today's
announcement by Senate Leadership that the Marriage Protection
Amendment drafted by AFM would be a top priority for the 109th
Congress as S.J. Resolution 1.

"In the face of those who predicted a leadership retreat from the
protection of marriage, the Senate leadership is making clear their
continued determination to support AFM's Marriage Protection
Amendment," said Matt Daniels, president of the Alliance for Marriage.
"We are proud that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist -- along with
other key Senators -- will be an original sponsor of our amendment in
the new Congress."

"The Marriage Protection Amendment drafted by AFM was introduced with
bi-partisan support in the Congress over three years ago," said
Daniels. "Our efforts to let the people decide the future of marriage
in America preceded the election -- and will continue so long as
activists strive to strike down our marriage laws."

"Most Americans believe that gays and lesbians have a right to live as
they choose. But they don't believe they have a right to
redefine marriage for our entire society," Daniels added.
"Americans want our laws to send a positive message to children about
marriage, family and their future."

"The constitutional problem created by almost a decade of activist
lawsuits to destroy our marriage laws demands a constitutional fix,"
Daniels said.

"Our Marriage Protection Amendment will protect marriage -- while
leaving all issues of benefits to the democratic process in the
states," Daniels said. "We believe this centrist approach
embodied in our amendment offers the best hope of a democratic
solution to the debate that has been forced on America through a
decade of lawsuits to overcome public opinion in court."

The Alliance for Marriage is a multicultural coalition whose Board of
Advisors includes Rev. Walter Fauntroy -- the D.C. Coordinator of the
March on Washington for Martin Luther King Jr. -- as well as other
civil rights and religious leaders, and national legal experts.

Prominent Christian leaders now denouncing Alliance For Marriage's queer partner

http://www.jewishworldreview.com | The Alliance for Marriage, which is spearheading the push for a constitutional amendment to limit matrimony to heterosexuals, is coming under fierce attack from its conservative religious base for its collusion with a controversial Muslim group.

AFM's embrace of Islamic Society of Northern America (ISNA), first reported in JewishWorldReview.com, has already mired the group in considerable controversy. Now, four nationally known religious conservatives, including a former presidential candidate and a renowned conservative strategist who helped launch the Religious Right, have decried the connection.

The criticism is likely to sting. Given its source, it can't be dismissed as leftist clap trap or journalistic carping. Already, prominent religious conservatives, including Father Richard John Neuhaus and Barry Freundel, known as "Lieberman's rabbi" because the Connecticut senator worships at his shul, have come under close scrutiny because they serve on the AFM advisory board alongside ISNA. But most of the examination was in Jewish, mainstream and gay publications. Even then, the press coverage took a toll on the AFM.

2. Let 'em try
Amendments to the Constitution are where stupid ideas (and a few good ones, admittedly) go to die.

I'm completly happy to let these Grundies blow their political capital on this one.

4. poor fundies
they hate the 'mohhamedans' but no one else cares enough about gay marriage to ally with them. Believe me, if Osama bin Laden was blowing up gay discos, he'd be a hero.

8. This is the only silver lining of the ruling by a federal court in FL last
week which upheld DOMA. The only argument the spineless Democrats in congress have been using is that an amendment isn't "needed" (rather than arguing on the basis of equality-both in terms of equality under tha law and equality in tax policy). Had the ruling gone the other way I have no doubt many of them would go ahead and vote for this amendment.

9. That's what I thought
That even moderate Repubs weren't going to go with the F.M.A. whilst Federal DoMA was still on the books.

10. And...it will be defeated again.
Man, Frist is such a limp fuckwad.

Although, on this issue, it might be outing time. The senior Senator from South Carolina is a prime example. He voted for FMA last year.
