NH couples to hold civil union ceremony just past midnight tonight
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 10:26 PM by tofunut
'The very moment it's possible'
State rep to exchange civil union vows Jan. 1

It's not gay marriage, true. But baby steps, many in the gay community figure, are needed before a larger leap can occur.

"It gives as much, with respect to rights for gays is concerned, as is possible," Morrison said. "It is a recognition of where we are. I know from the bottom of my heart that separate and equal is not equal, and that is clear. . . . But we have as good a civil union (law) as exists in the country."

They'll gather tomorrow night, on the plaza in front of the State House steps. Around 20 same-sex couples are expected to participate in a group ceremony that will usher in an era of state-sponsored unity.

They'll wait for midnight and they'll receive the benefits, both legally and emotionally, of legislation passed by lawmakers last April.

Baby steps suck, but I'm glad to see that some people will be finding joy in the first moments of 2008.
Congratulations, folks.

edit: Should I mention that two of those people who will be joining in the late-night ceremony are my moms?
:D
