Civil Unions Would Drain State Coffers Connecticut Govt. Report Says
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/03/031305connCost.htm

nice little scare tactic

Connecticut could lose nearly $1 million a year because of decreased inheritance tax revenue if the state allows civil unions of same-sex couples, a new legislative report says.

Municipalities would also pay a price, up to $1.5 million a year for health insurance, pensions and other benefits for town and city workers who enter into civil unions, according to the legislature's nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis.

The report provided general cost estimates, but said the true cost of civil unions is difficult to estimate.

1. SPIN IT: Connecticut Republicans hate marriage, like taxes.

2. Connecticut collects approximately 10.6 BILLION in state taxes per year.
I rather doubt 1 million in tax revenues is going to bankrupt the state.

That is 0.0094% of their state taxes revenues.

3. States lost $ when they had to integrate schools, too.
In Texas, where I'm from, "Colored Schools" got hand-me-down textbooks, equipment, and furniture.

After integration was forced on the poor innocent white kids (gag me), those schools had to be funded on the same level as the "White Schools."

Is the governor of Connecticut suggesting that THE RIGHT THING TO DO depends on the state's wallet?

Ooooooooh, I know! Let's just be as Pure D evil as we want to be because doing the right thing is just too bleeping expensive.

Un EFFING believable!

These freaks never cease to amaze me!

6. And there it is: The admission that gays & lesbians are treated unequally
This is PRECISELY what makes same-sex legal marriage (civil unions, whatever the hell you want to call it) a civil rights matter.

7. Adjust the benefits system ...
... or treat gays as free and equal citizens?

What to do? :puke:

I believe the benefits system can take it. What would they do if the same number of straight couples suddenly decided to get married?

8. Good, they've admitted that gays are harmed by the "public policies"
so they either need to let us be treated equally in the eyes of the law, or eliminate ALL (and I mean every last damn one) of the benefits from str8 marriages. Those breeders are stealing my tax dollars and I want it stopped.

9. Wouldn't it cost the same if all the gays married opp. sex spouses?
Presumably, what the gay-haters want is for gays to turn straight and marry opposite sex spouses, which they are already legally entitled to do, and this of course would cost the same as if they married same sex partners. So what's the problem? It's okay to lose the money on straight marriages but not on gay marriages?

10. kind of a localism

Connecticut is very dependent on the strong concentration of insurance 'industry' centered in Hartford. (You know, the people who bought- oops, I meant: brought- us Joe Lieberman?)

This is a kind of homage to them, to the thousands of actuaries who live there and would suffer lots of pencil sticking injuries and such trying to estimate the costs and variance and potential margins involved on cheap paper napkins and junk mail envelopes.

11. Whoops, oh wait! Civil unions actually *generate* millions of $$!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3286995

Oh look, and the study was done in Connecticut, of ALL places. In fact, unions would generate way more than enough to offset the losses alleged by the puggies. Just in case anyone missed it! :)
