Ugh. Just found out one of my co-workers is a bit of a homophobe.
Granted, this is the one that nobody there likes. We all got a weird and unpleasant vibe from her right from the start. So it's really no big surprise.

Long story short, a gay couple came through my line at the cash register and our registers are set up so that two people work back to back, facing outward. She was right behind me. Anyhow, as usual I was talking with the customers, being friendly, ect. As soon as they left she started saying things like, "Oh my god, were they flirting with you? That's so gross. Oh my god. That's so disgusting."

:banghead:

I was sooooooo tempted to say something like, "Yes, there was flirting. I started it." I told my boss about it afterwards and he laughed and said, "You would have blown her mind." :P

2. I liked my boss's response to it though.
He basically gave me tacit permission to fuck with her head as much as possible if it happens again. :P

4. I'd really rather not think about that.
While she's not physically unattractive, the personality more than makes up for it.

5. It sounds like she was creating a hostile work environment
there is no reason to associate you, a co-worker, with total strangers who are customers and imply any sort of flirtation, or sexual vibes between the customers and you the employee.

My two cents worth: I would be very cautious.

I don't think playing it up to blow her mind is so safe, as later she could turn it around and say something like, "My homosexual co-worker is always making comments to me about his/her orientation and attractions to customers and it makes me uncomfortable."

Also, the boss should have nipped the whole scenario in the bud. Warned the co-worker to stop making sexual comments in a work setting aimed at you or about you and should have not "seemed" to encourage you to respond on the same level.

I hope I am not out of line here giving advice, but, I just hate see anyone get caught up in harassment suits, hostile work place allegations, especially of a sexual nature. Jobs are hard to come by these days and people like your co-worker are often good liars, especially if they are bigots and think that society is one their side against gays. Just saying...

Good luck.

:hi:

7. I just found out that
My husband is homophone about his brother of 50 years.
Funny that he can be your brother for 50 years and suddenly "Oh No, Not that"

Silly man.

My older brother, on the other hand said, " No, I thought he was my friend?"

Huh? What?

19. So did you say ANYTHING to her to call her out for her bigotry?
People like that will continue saying hostile and inappropriate things until someone calls them out and shames them for their bigotry. There are so many things you could or should have said to her, at the moment of her inappropriate speech:

INDIRECT:

"Gross? Why do you feel that way, Do you have a problem with Gay people?"

"So what if they were flirting with me? I find it harmless and flattering -I'm secure enough in my sexual identity to not be offended by people who are different from me, aren't you?"

"No, they weren't flirting with me, they were just being friendly. Geez, what's your hang up with lesbians? Why are you obsessed with other people's sex lives?"

DIRECT:

"I find your comment to offensive and discriminatory and it is inappropriate in the workplace. I do not appreciate and do not want to hear your homophobic remarks."

In my past years of work/office experience, I found the only way for people like your coworker to know that their behavior/speech is offensive and inappropriate is to say something to them -- let them know, either directly or indirectly, that such hostility and discrimination is not tolerated in the work place, otherwise, like a child who is never corrected for his/her bad behavior, they will continue to repeat it.

20. I just kinda gave her a 'you're being juvenile' kind of brush-off.
Which is kind of ironic because we have several high schoolers who work there who are a helluva lot more mature than she. :P

Edited on Tue Dec-16-08 03:50 PM by sui generis
who said a friend of his from college turned out to be a "pervert", you know, into guys.

I said, oh god I am sooo embarrassed - I was sure you were gay. Dude! I think he sprained his neck doing the double take.

Now he keeps asking me what gave me that impression . . . but ya know, gaydar moves in mysterious ways, especially when it's broken. Never know WHAT could set it off.
