Forget "bipartisan" solutions. If we want a public health care plan, the Republican Party must be turned into "the enemy" of health care in the mind of the public.
The American people want guaranteed, Universal healthcare. The "Health Care Industrial-Complex" knows this well, so they are relying upon an implicit threat to intimidate the Democrats--the threat that they will shift their massive financial resources towards the GOP and actively work to thwart the Democrats' electoral prospects in 2010 and beyond. Thus far this tactic has worked because the issues underlying health care reform are complex and easily demagogued--on the one hand polls strongly indicate that the American people want a public option, but many, many are frightened that their current health care--which is the lifeblood of their families and their futures--will be curtailed or cut with the introduction of a publically-financed solution. As long as the Health Care Lobby can raise the spectre of a re-emergent Republican majority, the Democrats will continue to be cowed.
