Virginia House Passes Amendment That Allows Sanctioned School Prayer
The Virginia House of Delegates has approved a sweeping amendment that would erase church-state protections from the state constitution and allow officially sanctioned prayer in the public schools.

The bill, HJ 537, proposes an amendment to the state's constitution that would "permit the exercise of religious expression, including prayer and 'religious beliefs, heritage, and traditions' on public property, including public schools...."

The Virginia House passed the proposed amendment by a 69-27 vote yesterday. It has been submitted to the Senate, which could consider it before the legislative session concludes on Feb. 26. (Constitutional amendments must win House and Senate passage in two sessions before being placed on a statewide ballot for voters.)
---------------------

The amendment's sponsor, Del. Charles W. Carrico Sr., said yesterday that the amendment was needed because Christians in the nation are becoming increasingly oppressed.

YOU ALREADY HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS ON PUBLIC PROPERTY. I can walk around with a 6 foot crucifix on my head if i wanted. but the state cannot sanction religious practices on public property because of that pesky 1st amendment. im a christian, but these people make me sick

edit: i have not read the actual text of the amendment, but how the HELL could it withstand ANY judicial analysis. well, assuming the court follows that quaint "constitution"

2. There's that "christians are being oppressed" meme again.

The sad thing is, some of these freaks actually believe it. They HAVE to believe it, because that sense of persecution is the only thing that animates them. Certainly they're not driven by a desire for harmony.

I'd like to have them show me their persecution. Heck, it's on TV. Everynight, liberal journalists tell us about Christians prevented from entering church, Christians shot in the street for praying, Christians being laid off while other religions get their jobs or promoted, and Christians being denied access to the media.

Makes no sense why they say that.
