AARP Has Conservative Competition.......
AMAC (Association of Mature American Citizens)is The Conservative alternative to AARP.

http://www.amac.us /

Many here on DU are unhappy with AARP's rightward turn.
AARP seems to have been trying some good old bipartisanship. Bipartisanship is all the rage now, UGH!
In reality I can't blame them for trying to hold on to all seniors. It would be a shame for seniors to splinter off and water down our negotiating power.

1. What's your point? Are we supposed to join this "conservative" competition?
No doubt set up by the pharmaceutical/insurance companies, like all the rest of them set up to compete with AARP?

Nobody hates AARP more than the FReepers. I don't get your point.

2. I was just pointing out the competition and my thought as to...
why AARP has started leaning more toward the right in the past recent years. It was just information for seniors who maybe didn't know they had conservative competition.

What did I say that could possibly make you think "Are we supposed to join this "conservative" competition"?

5. Well, conservatives claim they are. I do agree they have been heading
down the wrong path and are not supporting seniors like they started out doing. Guess they are getting greedy.

4. They went all out for health care reform, and paid the price with their members.
They lost thousands of members supporting health care reform. Hundreds of thousands, I would guess. That's "leaning right?" They supported Part D, and were ripped here for it, but let's also remember - they were the prime movers in stopping Bush's privatization of Social Security in its tracks. Without AARP, we might have seen Social Security as part of the total meltdown that was Bush's economy.

Look, I'm not here to defend AARP, but let's at least be knowledgable. The bottom line is that EVERY ONE of these cheap competitors is funded by insurance or pharmaceutical interests, and that should be recognized here. I threw away the Bush cover issue, too, but they also put Betty White on another cover. I liked that one.

10. I wish there was something we could do about that.
Seniors should be allowed much more say in their decision making, imho.

8. Just an fyi: I belong to AARP and have no intention of...
leaving. I just wanted to say, that Dem seniors should realize, they have conservative competition and that it would not be helpful if they were able to water down our senior bargaining power. I guess I was sorta sticking up for AARP.

6. Are they against Medicare and Social Security? Telling members to refuse them?
Edited on Sun Jan-16-11 07:10 PM by SharonAnn
If they were today's true conservatives, they'd demand that the government stop paying them Social Security and stop paying them Medicare benefits. Oh, and don't forget their Medicare Part D drug benefits.

They would demand that they be allowed to take care of themselves and not contribute to the bankrupting of their grandchildren.

Or whatever.

I had an uncle like this. Retired Army Reserve, retired defense contractor, spouses's benefit from his wife who'd been a teacher. Constantly complaining about the government.

I pointed out to him that he and his wife had lived their entire lives on the taxpayer, West Point, graduate school, US Army, defense contractor, state scholarship to Teacher's College, etc. Why was he complaining?

He got so mad at me that he took me off his email list (no great loss).

11. I have the same situation, but fortunately not a relative.
I always have to chuckle when he complains about the incompetent government.

It's the same one that paid for his cancer surgery/treatments. They don't see it, though.
