I just watched "Super Size Me" again.
You know, the Morgan Spurlock flick where he eats nothing but McDonalds for a month. I had missed an important point at the end of the movie the first couple times I watched it. As you may know, his girlfriend is a vegan chef. She set up his detox diet for after the experiment. With all the damage that he did, the numbers, the doctors going crazy over what he was doing to himself...

It took 8 weeks to bring it all back to normal on a good vegan diet. That's incredible.

What a chuckle I had at that.

1. That's inspiring to know
I missed that too.

Wow, what an eye-opener that movie was. And I already knew how awful Mickey D's was! My son never whines for junk food; he simply knows it's not an option.

2. Her book is really interesting.
She describes the diet and the detox process post-film.

I watched that movie the night before Thanksgiving - such timing. :D

10. Here's her website.
http://www.healthychefalex.com/index.htm

One of her services is to home cook for people. I've always thought that would be a cool job. If I ever won the lotto I'd open a vegan cafe. I'd cook all day & if no one came to eat it I'd give it away.

3. It would be hard to overestimate the healing powers of a very good diet
Edited on Wed Sep-19-07 06:41 PM by LeftyMom
I won't even pretend I eat anything close to an ideal diet, but simply going vegan got rid of most of my excess weight (and there was a lot,) nearly eliminated symptoms of my IBS and very suddenly eliminated my asthma- I went from 10 or more uses of my rescue inhaler a week to not even renewing my prescription for it. Oh, and my skin is a million times better too, I was on antibiotics and retin-A and Rx strength acne cream, none with very good results, and I simply didn't need it anymore because my skin cleared up.

4. I have had bipolar disorder all my life
I am progressing towards veganism (totally vegan at home and work; ever-rarer occurrences dairy and fish on other occasions) and have noticed that so far it supports my efforts to manage my illness very well. Carb cravings are way down and my moods are much more stable.

9. Have I ever mentioned that my allergies have completely disappeared?
I suffered miserably for 20 years with the very typical allergic reactions to, as my allergist stated, "everything" including dust, cat/dog dander, pollen, people, etc. I was on Flonase and Allegra-D.

Haven't touched either more than twice this year. Nor last year. Nor the year before.

I also stopped wearing my glasses.

I'm a recent eczema diagnosee. Long standing issue. Can't wait to see what I can do about that.

11. Pretty much the only food depicted in that movie that I could look at without gagging
was that one (actually pretty yummy looking) vegetable tart and quinoa meal that she made at the very beginning.

I never get the whole MacDonalds thing man. Even before I was vegan, even if I didn't care about their disgusting practices towards animals and people, their food is just SO GROSS :puke:. I can never walk by one without feeling slightly nauseated at the smell of their crap wafting out. People have to be trained to like that crap .
IMO it is just that they get people young. Almost all the people, meat-eaters and not alike actually, that I know, who did not grow up eating that stuff find it gross.

15. CNN has been showing a special, "America's Killer Diet."
I've only seen the last 20 minutes, but that was pretty good. They 'deconstructed' a Twinkie. A guy from the food industry showed how Twinkies used to be a basic sponge cake of butter, cream, sugar & now they are full of emulsifiers, conditioners, preservatives & oh, a little butter, cream & sugar.

I lived on Twinkies as a kid. ;)

Recently, a young woman I work with found out I was a vegetarian & said I didn't look like a veg. I asked her what a veg looked like & she said, "Sickly, pale, bad skin." Yeah, that's me.

17. Still haven't seen the movie
it is still on my list and so is "Fast Food Nation".

Since we are comparing health improvement notes, Going vegan eliminated my chronic sniffles. I suffered quite a bit from colds. Oh! and my bp is totally normal now. It had been high for a long, long time. I suppose that is because I am at home with my multiple critters.

I've been home since May on a disability for a foot overuse injury. Not much can help that I guess; I was on a full steam marathon for so many years; on my feet in excess of 14 hours a day; over 20 days a month. All the angels couldn't help with that one! I am taking life easy now in my New Balance 811s totally equipped with orthotics and I have hope for a full recovery.
