Hot drinks for cold winter nights
OK, since moving to Houston, we don't really have very many cold winter nights, but this recipe is from Southern Living about 20 years go, so I make it every winter and keep it on supply in the freezer.

It's called hot buttered rum, but you can substitute Kaluha, Amaretto, brandy, etc. For those who don't drink alcohol or to serve it to kids, plain old "hot buttered" with a splash of an extact, like vanilla or coconut is great, too.

I really wanted it when our 36 hour cold spell hit last week but having become a wuzzy southerner, it was too cold to go buy the ingredients, hahaha. Since then, it's been in the 70's but I'm making it tomorrow anyway.

What other supplies should I buy? Any other favorite drinks for while I watch Dr. Zhivago?

HOT BUTTERED RUM

1/2 gallon premium vanilla ice cream, softened
1 pound butter, softened (no substitute)
1 (1-pound) box powdered sugar
1 (1-pound) box dark brown sugar
2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Combine all ingredients, mixing well. Place in a freezer-safe container and store in freezer until ready to use.

To serve: Place 1 ounce rum in a mug with 2 tablespoons mix. Fill mug with boiling water and top with additional nutmeg and whipped cream, if desired. Add a cinnamon-stick stirrer if you'd like.

3. Hot chocolate with Butter Shots...
I just use my regular hot chocolate mix and add a little DeKuyper Butter Shots (butterscotch schnapps) to it...it's delicious!

4. That sounds like a great quickie.........
We've often used the hot chocolate powder in our hot buttered rum mix (sans rum) for our grandkids. OK, I admit it, for me too!!

5. I do the same with Rumple Minze...
I love mint/chocolate and it has much more of a "kick" than butterscotch schnapps.

6. Mulled Wine
This is a recipe best made in a large pot and shared with lots of people. :) You can vary it according to taste. Sometimes I don't even put in the apple juice.

- A large jug of red wine (preferably Livingston Cellers Red Rose)
- one quarter to half a bottle of apple juice
- 1-2 apples
- 1-2 oranges
- cloves
- nutmeg, cinnamon, & cinnamon sticks, to taste
- a few shots of whiskey (optional)

Put the wine in the BIG pot. Add the apple juice. Put some cloves in the skin of the apples and oranges. Slice them up and put them in the pot. Add the spices and a few cinnamon sticks. Heat it up! Don't boil, but let it get hot and then keep it warm. Most of the alcohol will burn off so if you want it to have an extra kick add a shot or two of whiskey.
