What does it mean when one of my CD/DVD drives starts
working even though I haven't told it to do anything?
F: whirs briefly and then stops, then it whirs briefly and stops again. It keeps doing this, and sometimes it whirs longer than just briefly and then stops again.
It's been possessed by SATAN! I suggest bashing on the power supply with a hammer until the magic blue smoke comes out. That's the only way to be sure you've exorcised the demons.
Windoze spins up the CD/DVD drive for the silliest of reasons. If you've got anything running that accesses a directory structure, it can initiate access of the drive.
When I'm running Windoze, I never keep a CD in the drive unless I'm using it for just this reason. It's irritating.
