Security software .. what is ...
CrypKey

If this process is running (crypserve.exe), what might it be related to? And/or how can I find out what program is using it?

1. This is anti-piracy software ...

It's only security software in the sense of typical copyright warrior doublespeak, sorta like digital "rights" management.

It can work in several ways and be distributed with several packages. However it is functioning, it's keeping track of some other bit of software that will probably cease to work if it is uninstalled.

You might be able to figure out to what it is attached by using some task monitor that lets you see the process threads through a certain view. I've always used CodeStuff Starter, but there are tons of them.

Things like this are why it's good to read the EULA. OTOH, it's entirely possible the EULA didn't mention it directly, rather referred to it in vague terms (you grant the right to ... install whatever the hell we want to lock you into the terms).

2. oops .
that's what I meant - anti-piracy. Thanks, Roy. Maybe it can be viewed via "Services"? I'm hoping to not install any additional software.

3. Possibly ...

I can't remember off the top of my head how you view a process thread using Windows itself. I'm sure it can be done. I just can't remember.
