1. Anybody who could help you might need more info
Does your system satisfy the requirements? http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/
Did you follow the installation instructions? http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/instructions/
What exactly do you mean "it doesn't seem to be working"? Nothing happens? Something weird happens?

2. When
I go to sites that use this flashplayer and they say I need to have it in order to view the site. I see that it is downloaded in the programs but it doesn't seem to be operating.

3. Assuming you installed it correctly, this might be a simple matter
of setting some system or browser preference

I probably don't know enough to help you

But let me point out, again, that nobody can help you if you don't provide enough info

For example, at least tell us what OS and browser you're using

8. Some questions, which may or may not help
Does your new flash work with a different browser, like Firefox?

Is your XP up to date? For example, do you have the latest service package?

After downloading, did the installation give you any strange messages?

Have you considered the possibility the download was corrupted? For example, have you uninstalled flash, downloaded a new copy, and reinstalled to check this?

9. good questions
I haven't tried it with another browser will do that tonight.
My XP is updated
I didn't receive any strange message in downloading but I have reinstalled a new copy with the same results. However, I had to install it from this page http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/support/index.html
using this •Flash_Player_10_ActiveX (Internet Explorer for Windows only) found at the bottom of the page. When I try to download it from through the regular way it doesn't do anything.

11. If you're trying to install 10.1, and you already had a previous version of Flash
you will probably first need to uninstall the previous version. I think I ran into this recently updating an XP PC in our house.

To uninstall, go to START / CONTROL PANEL / ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS.
Find the Flash program, click CHANGE/REMOVE.
Then install the new version of Flash.

12. Okay still
not meeting with any success. I think I have made a copy on my PC of 10.1 but not really downloaded the program. Does anyone think that what may be preventing me from downloading would be my virus protectors. I have AVG, CCcleaner, and I suspect some old McAfee files hanging around that I can't seem to destroy. Should I uninstall these as well along with this copy of 10.1 and start over? What do you think?

13. My memory is starting to come back on this, though I use Firefox not IE
I believe you first have to install a "downloader" tool, or something like that. You may get a banner across the top of your browser, where you will have to give permission to have that installed. Once that tool is installed, you would install the Flash program.

Here's what I would do:

1. Make sure your current version of Flash is uninstalled.
2. Go to the Flash page http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ , to install the app. Make sure you "unselect" the optional McAfee security app. Click "agree" Watch for any banners or windows about installing the "download" or "install" tool. Say "yes" if prompted to install the tool. You may then be prompted to restart your browser or even your computer.
3. Revisit the Flash page again to install the app. It should install this time.

Unless you've got some other problem :-)

16. See if javascript is enabled in your browser
Sites often use it to detect if Flash is installed. If scripting is disabled, a lot of them will dump messages telling you to install Flash, instead of telling you to turn scripting on.

To make a quick check, go to YouTube, and add it to your Trusted Sites zone:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd883248%28WS.10%29.aspx#addinternetsites

(You might also want to check if scripting is already enabled for your trusted sites -- click the Custom Level button on the Trusted Sites dialog from the instructions above. It'll pop another dialog. Scroll way down to the Scripting section and make sure Enabled is ticked under Active Scripting. If it isn't, select it, close the dialogs and restart the browser)

If it works, you need to choose whether to enable scripting only for sites you select (recommended) or enable scripting for all sites that are in IE8's Internet Zone (not recommended):

It's possible that you've got Flash disabled.

Flash updated to version 10.1.85.3 today. I highly recommend using the uninstaller for older versions of Adobe Flash:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Go here and check Flash UN-installed correctly:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Go here and download and install the latest version:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Then go back here and check your installation:

26. Well still no success
I have uninstalled with the uninstall software re-installed, checked that it was successful, enable scripting, manage add-ons however only has listed Shockwave Flash Object not Shockwave Active X Control listed could that be my problem? Would it be effective if I just uninstalled IE 8 and reinstalled it?
