Dell laptop keyboard question

Awhile back, the keyboard on my b/f's laptop did something really weird and I can't seem to figure out a way to fix it. When you type now, you have to hit the blue function key if you want to use any of the letters on the right side of the keyboard. I assumed he'd just hit a command accidentally somewhere and that it would be simple to fix. No luck whatsoever, so please... anyone have any idea how to fix this? :shrug:

1. num lock key ??

it's possible his default state is to have "num lock" turned on ...
