Demo programs with 30 lifespan: does my McAfee think it's a trojan?
Have downloaded two different 30 day free program appraisal versions of programs we would like to try before buying. Both were deleted my the virus program as having a Trojan.

So, is McAffee just picking up on the 30 disable component as a Trojan or are there real bugs to worry about in the demos? Seems odd that two different ones, from two different companies in two different countries would be a threat.

Any thoughts, comments on this would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get a program to do home design, but want to be able to compare features AND how comfortable they are for ME to use before I plunk down money. Is my virus protection gonna keep offing any demo with a 30 disable in it?

1. I can't stand McAfee.
Try AVG freeware anti-virus; you won't be disappointed.

2. We did and we were not only disappointed, but it caused problems
Havocdad removed AVG after several weeks of problems. McAfee been OK this time around. The older versions gave me trouble. But for this one little issue, no problems.

Just wondering if the disable feature is what is tripping it up.

3. What kind of problems?
I use AVG on 4 different computers here at home and installed it on at least a dozen others without any problems.

4. Didn't let us run some programs which have never been a problem
also did not work well with out server on mail.

Am not looking for testimonials on security systems. We have what has worked best for us. What I am looking for is an answer to the question.

Thanks for your commercials for a different security system. Not trying to be snarky, but THAT is not what this thread is about. Truth is, we had the same problem with AVG when trying to run time limited demos. Had a lot of problems with trying to run things when we had the AVG on.

The question is: Is it the 30 disable component to the trial subsubscriptions that is causeing security system to decide there is a Trojan in the program?

5. Don't know

I've run trial demos with AVG, I've even run weird things that conflict with windoze but never argued with AVG. Mail problem I've had is that about once a month AVG didn't respond fast enough to query from server and wouldn't connect. I just hit the "Get Mail" button again and no problem.

6. Thank you for weighing in on my question
I will keep trying to gather some info from some others on the issue and see if there is a pattern.

7. Possibilities ...

The first thing that springs to mind is that a lot (A LOT) of this software is bundled with other software that installs itself at the same time. An ethical company will explicitly tell you this in the open and actually give you the option of whether to install. Most companies aren't that ethical. Legitimate companies will include information, in some form, regarding this other software in their EULA, which few people bother to read or even scan and so don't notice it, but this meets legal requirements. Still, not all companies are legitimate.

And, one of those common types of software to come bundled with shareware, demos, or freeware detects as a trojan because that's basically what it does, acts as a trojan. It may not be entirely malicious (although it might be), but it's still gathering info about you and your system and opening an avenue for attack on it by others who may or may not even be associated with the original program.

And example of this is TGSOFT and its StyleXP software. It's a good software if you like eye-candy and have grown bored with the standard themes of XP, like most people. The installer for the software itself is fine, although limited to a 30 day trial period. However, start downloading themes, which you need for the program itself to be of any real use, and the first few pages of "new" stuff on themexp is always wrapped in an installer that is a bundle of both the theme and a marketing trojan. Any decent virus checker won't let you install it.

Another possibility is that you're getting this software from a bad source that has had its collection of files corrupted, intentionally or not, by malicious code.

Yet another possibility is that the part of the program that implements the time restriction presents itself as a trojan in the way it acts. If so, it probablly phones home on a regular basis, IOW.
