Today my eight week old
rescue boston tested postive for giardia. Apparently it's a water borne parasite. She was rescued from pretty horrible conditions from a backyard "breeder".

She seemed fine but began to vomit in the last few days. She has been given oral meds to clear up from the vet.

My other dog tested negative, we cleaned the water bowl out with bleach and picked up the backyard.

I've been reading some things on the internet... yes, yes.. I know... about it taking a looong time to clear up. :(

Anyone have any experience with that? What can I expect with the treatment? 50 MG of Metronidazole every 12 hours is the course of treatment.

1. When my Sainted Vet was testing one of my cats...
...for this (came up negative, thank Bast), she recommended yogurt...the kind with the LIVE cultures.
She said this was good for the digestive system anytime, but especially when a furkid was on antibiotics...helped keep the 'good' gut bacteria functional.

She 'splained me how you really do need bacteria in your gut...no bacteria means no digestion.
The intestines just move the stuff down the road (peristalsis). It's the little guys who break it down so we can absorb the nutrients.

Finnegan LOVED it :9...Mama never served up anything this good, according to him...:)

3. If it doesn't say that it has live cultures on the
carton, it probably does not. You can also buy probiotic capsules, but they cost more than yogurt.

4. anytime my dogs had to have antibiotics I gave them yogurt
to keep their digestion in good order. The one dog loved it the other hated it. For him that hated it I eventually bought the yogurt culture pills and dropped them down his throat every day that he was on the antibiotics. He never liked any kind of dairy products... even cheese and ice cream. Weird. Oh, but dirt, rocks, tree bark... yum yum! Silly dog.
