Shari took her last trip today -
She's been going downhill steadily; she's 15 years old, suffering from doggie altzheimers, hot spots and arthritis for the past thwo. Last Friday, she started showing digestive tract failure, and her eyes were starting to get a yellow cast, and she remained pretty much sedentary other than when she had to go - which was every three, four hours.
Usually, when she's riding in the car, she's moving around and singing - even a couple months ago, she was active. Today, she just lay down on the towel.

The Vet figured she had a few more months, but they wouldn't be quality months. So we all sat down on some quilts they provided, and helped Shari take her last nap. No more pain

Good night, good girl. Not having you greet me at the door, even if you seemed confused about why you came to meet me, is going to be hard.

Haele

11. So sorry, Haele....
It's such a hard thing to do, even when it's the right thing, the loving thing, and necessary.

12. Thanks all. It was tough, because the decline was so quick.
Three days, from a happy, but rather confused and creaky old dog, to a pretty miserable lump of canine. When she stopped begging for food, and cut her eating and drinking down to almost nothing, we knew it was getting close to the end. All she wanted to do was sleep and get an occasional pet. When she became incontenent, it was worse for her than for us; she hated going in the house.
It's still hard coming home, and I'm still listening for her in my sleep.

Thanks again.

Haele

15. that coming through the door part seems hardest for me too
I also was with the dog that went before my last one even though with both of them toward the end they weren't coming to the door to greet me all the time anymore. I'm not sure why that one thing seems to be hardest to deal with of all the other little individual things.

14. I'm so terribly sorry
I had to do the "last visit" with my doggie several weeks ago, so I know how bad you feel. Bless you for doing the right thing and being with her for her final journey. It is indeed so very damn hard to lose our loved ones.

17. You did the right thing, helping to release her from her sick body.
I'm sure her dog spirit is soaring now. I believe that animals do not fear death. Sorry your little furry one is gone, but she still has a big place in your heart. May you find peace and comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and that she spent her last moments on earth with her beloved human companions.

19. Ahh, I'm sorry.
Doggie alzheimers sucks the big one. My boxer/bulldog had it. He hung around for a long time- too long, actually. He was truly miserable, and we were convinced that since he didn't appear to be in pain, we couldn't put him down. It was nightmarish. I still miss him terribly and think about him every day. He was my first stray dog, and even though I only had him for 8 years, it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

I know how you're hurting and I'm sorry for your loss.
