Daughter's dog symptoms, Boxer, 1-2 years old.
Edited on Tue Sep-27-11 11:21 PM by elleng
'put her out in the back yard and when I brought her in for the night her face was swollen, eyes almost swollen shut. She's breathing fine and is acting completely normal'

Sounds like insect bite to me. Thoughts? Suggestions?

1. As a non-Vet, my first guess is that it is an allergic reaction..
I would take the dog to the Vet ASAP!!

2. Call the Vet. Ask if it's OK to give Benadryl
If it is really bad you will have to bring your pup in for a shot of prednizone. I have 3 dogs that spend all summer sniffing around the wild flowers so I always keep plenty of Benadryl handy.

3. Sounds like a spider bite. Hope it worked out okay
Years ago, our dog was bit by a brown recluse spider. His head swelled to nearly twice the size and he was drooling. Of course it was a Saturday night and we had to take him to the emergency vet clinic. He was nearly completely better by the time we got there. The first question the vet asked was "Did you recently get a load of firewood delivered?" and yes we had, just the day before.

It was scary, but our dog Ranger returned to normal without any treatment.

4. Thanks, all.
Daughter was about to give Sammie benadryl, after hearing from a pharmacist friend that numerous vets had recommended such for their patients. BUT thankfully Sammie's swelling began to dissipate without meds; daughter can see her eyes now, and daughter may finally get some rest!

:hi:

5. Sounds like an allergic reaction to something
My son's Lab had something similar and gave him benedryl. It cleared up in a couple of days.

6. Yes, we think it was an insect bite.
Started to 'deflate' next day, w no meds; would have used benadryl if no improvement.
Daughter was particularly concerned because her cat and another in the family had died as a result of spider bites.

7. Had something similar happen to one of my hounds..
Side of her face/throat were swollen so badly that her eye was
literally hanging out....probably a bee sting. Took a big shot of
benadryl before it started to go down. Scary. Glad your boxer
is getting better.......z

8. Thanks, z.
Fortunately her throat was not affected; just eyes, tissue around eyes, I think.
