My husband just got laid off
The consulting company he works for just called to say he's being laid off effective Dec. 31 by the company where he's placed. We are beyond stunned. I haven't had any writing assignments from the PR firm since October, and scarcely worked all year. I did some freelance work in the summer, but haven't found anything recently.

We have zero savings because we've been helping our older daughter with food and rent, since her boyfriend's been searching for job for 3 months. He finally got a job starting Jan. 5. She's been working 11-hour days and he's been selling bone marrow and volunteering for medical experiments at NIH and picking up odd jobs here and there. I don't know how we will manage to help them with the January rent, and still pay the mortgage.

I'd like to hope Dave gets something soon, because he's an Oracle database administrator. I feel pretty helpless because I've got fibromyalgia and can't physically manage a full time job.

This story is being repeated all across the country, and I know lots of people are much worse off than we are. But it's still frightening.

Damn that son of a bitch B*sh and his evil bastard cronies for what they have done to the people of this nation.

1. oh, so very sorry
That is very tough, and yes, it seems like this economy is hitting all kinds of people that do not expect it and can ill afford to lose their jobs.

I am sending good vibes to your whole family.

Did you see a post I did about using Cybershaman for job issues?--if you are inclined to this sort of thing. I think it worked well for someone in my family.

7. Yes
it is frightening - but please know that the universe will provide what you need.

With the exception of the intermittent consulting gig I've been unemployed since December 2002. There really hasn't been any discretionary income but I've been able to pay the bills and provide basic necessities while taking very little from my savings. I'm single and have not had any financial assistance from family or friends. My expereince has been such that I no longer aspire to work and serve someone else's financial interests. Instead I want to aquire more skills in order to provide myself greater opportunities. My only real concern going it on my own is health care.

I can't blame Bush and his cronies. Instead I blame the fundamentalist Christians who have embraced a false gospel of prosperity and greed, who have endeavored to make the mission of the church one of legislating societal standards and who have enabled the Republican partyto assume and maintain poitical power.

8. The same thing happened here, LE. MrSG got laid off last Saturday.
The company is keeping someone who has less skills than he does, but she makes less than he, and she is something of a brown noser. Guess that's what really matters to this company.

I'm sending good vibes your way, and hope your husband is able to find a good, new job in the very near future.

9. This has got to be a very scary
difficult time out there. I'm not exactly in the corporate world right now, but in 2001 some of us went through two layoffs at our firm within two months. It was traumatic for those who left and those of us who stayed. The company I had worked for three years prior closed completely. We had 2,500 people in our location. The building was shut down. That was the tech bubble bust. Some things are changed forever after something like that.

I feel that he will be placed with another company rather quickly. I also feel impelled to encourage you with the blessings of your family. At least you have each other .. sounds so cliche'. It might not be obvious, though. It is so much easier to make it with a special helper and other family members. Encouraging wishes for you all, and Season's Greetings.

12. Thank you so much
Your support means a lot!

My husband worked at Fannie Mae for 17 years and took an early retirement buyout in late 2007. At least he didn't stay there and get axed after the buyouts ended.

14. {{{{LiberalEsto and family}}}} and {{{{{everyone}}}}....
I can't express how very sorry I am. Life is so hard, for so many right now. My situation has been tenuous, worrying about a roof over our heads month to month, for the last six years, so nothing has really changed here. The sad part is, I'm joined in this same rather nightmarish stress cycle by more and more people every day.

As a parent, a single parent, I empathize tremendously. It's hard enough when it's just you, or even you and hubby, but when you are worrying about others as well....it is so very hard.

He does have such a wonderful skill set, so hopefully something will open up very soon for him. Hopefully something soon will open for everyone!

I wish I had words of wisdom, but in lieu of that please know I send a heartfelt hug your way, and wish for wondrous openings to appear before you any moment now....
