Any reading suggestions?
Does anyone have any book suggestions that would be applicable for someone who wants a relatively light read but still have it be spiritual in nature?

My sister will be traveling over the holidays and would like to take a book with her. Since she'll be on vacation, she'll probably not want it to be too "heavy".

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. :)

1. The Alchemist?

by Paulo Coelho.

I just finished it a couple weeks ago.

I don't know if I'd call it light,
but neither did I find it heavy,
and definitely spiritual.

2. Thanks for the suggestion, Crab Nebula!
I bought this book myself over a year ago and haven't gotten around to reading it yet. The first several pages were good though...

I'm going to have to look around for my copy for myself. I'll also let her know about this book. (I'm going to give her the titles of all books that are recommended so that she can check them out herself.)

Thanks again for your help.

3. Eat Pray Love
Unless she's already read it. It's fun.

5. Me three...

In truth I haven't read it, but a good friend discovered this book WHILE she was traveling
(given to her as a gift by someone she met along the way). When she got home, both the inspiration that only travel can bring, as well as what the book inspired, fuelled some radical and healthy changes in her life that have really moved her along her spiritual path.
So my recommendation comes as a third party observer. I believe the book's author/main character is
also very much changed during her travels. So it seems an ideal 'travel book'.

The other I'd recommend (depending on where your sister is in life) is also fun and very
uplifting. It's called, Excuse Me, Your LIFE Is Waiting, by Lynn Grabhorn. I'm hesitant
to recommend it again only because last time I mentioned it some voiced their disapproval because of Lynn's choice of 'suicide' due to her illness, apparently feeling that makes her less credible as an author. That's not how I see it. Beyond being unwilling to judge her for such a deeply personal decision, I think even troubled artists can produce powerful and useful work in many different fields.

9. Thanks, Dover.
In reference to Excuse Me, Your LIFE Is Waiting, I remember your earlier recommendation. It's enough for me that you recommend it for it to be worthy of checking out. I sent my sister the link to this thread. She's always looking for a good read, so if she doesn't read it now, I'm sure that she will at one point. (Maybe she and I will do it together.)

Thanks again!

7. Thank you for this suggestion, Dora.
I sent a link to this thread to my sister a few days ago.

I was given this book as a Christmas present last year and because of my work schedule for most of the year, haven't had an opportunity to read it. Given what you and the others here have said, I'm going to move it to the top of my reading list. :)

Thanks again!

6. A non-fiction suggestion - Crossing to Avalon: A Woman's Midlife Quest for the Sacred Feminine
by Jean Shinoda Bolen. It is a beautiful book that is about the author's spiritual prilgamage visiting sacred sites in Europe. If your sis enjoys anything to do with the Grail legend or exporing feminine spirituality she probably will like this. While the title says it is about midlife it is more about change and growing through the changes.

If your sister enjoys fantasy novels I suggest Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. While intended for kids I found this book very engaging. While his usual style might be simplified a bit for the younger audience the same deep layered story is still there with vivid characters and laugh out loud moments found in his adult novels. If you haven't read any Pratchett his storytelling is sort of what one would get crossing Monty Python with Lord of the Rings with a moral to the story hidden somehow amongst all the hijinks so one is not bopped over the head by it.

12. you are very welcome
I love the kids series Terry Pratchett started with Wee Free Men. The main character is Tiffany Aching who is the sort of child who reads the dictionary and is known for her cheese making. When her little brother is kidnapped by the queen of the fairies she knows there is no way her parents or anyone else would believe her so she sets out to save him armed with a cast iron skillet and her wits. Oh and the Nac Mac Feegle decide to lend her a hand who are tiny pictsies who normally enjoy drinking, stealing, drinking, fighting, and drinking and are ferocious fighters in spite of being 6 inches tall.

15. Thank you, Peake.
Even the Amazon reviews are inspiring. The book must be amazing.

I'll definitely have to check this book out myself as well. There's nothing more powerful than love.

13. Eat, Pray, Love - probably my favorite book of all time
Although I adored "A Prayer for Owen Meany" (that's a dense one), EPL vaulted right to the top and stays there. I couldn't wait to read about her next adventure. There was so much wisdom in that book - goodness. And her writing skills? I'd like to hate her for them but can't. :)

Good suggestions, you guys.

16. That's it... I'm going downstairs right now and finding that book!
If she didn't already pick it up (based upon the recommendations here), I want to have it read by the time I see her so that I can give it to her to take home with her on the return flight.

Thank you, mysticalchick.
