This was one of the many things that helped me to understand what had happened. What a lot of people don't know is that the CDC and the IOM have known about this since 1998. They aren't looking at this because they don't want to have to deal with the "medicolegal" (their word, used at the Simpsonwood conference where they decided to cover up their culpability) nightmare.

Yeah, I love how they want to concentrate on the symptoms instead of the reasons behind the epidemic. I used to believe the CDC was a somewhat ethical if horribly bureacratic science based organization. My two years researching the Autism epidemic cured me of that one. I wouldn't send my dog to them for information. After the number they pulled with the Autism issue, they have zero credibility with me.

Increased diagnosis and interventino is only a good thing.

And I'll cut him some slack on his terminology there. Autism cannot be "cured" in the same sense that, say, a bacterial infection is. However, it very well may be cured in the same sense that polio was.

25. I don't want to be cured! I don't want who I am to be "combatted"

I'm on the autistic spectrum. I'm "self-diagnosed" with Asperger syndrome, and have been told I "possibly/probably" have it. But I wouldn't want it any other way! I am who I am, and I have gifts and talents as well as deficits. You see, I'm not that good at relating to people, I don't have many friends my own age (I'm a teenager - most of my friends are adults), and I have been bullied for most of my life. BUT I'm intelligent, creative, and HAPPY. I am a writer, a musician and an activist. My autistic traits have actually given me many gifts. For example, I have great fact retention and since I am "Obsessive", I can concentrate on one thing for a long time and get quite good at it.

No, I am NOT poisoned by mercury or god-knows-what else! If that's the case, why are there so many multi-generational autistic famillies? In my own famility, my dad is what I refer to as "half-aspie" - he has autistic traits, but probably wouldn't be diagnosed with asperger syndrome. My paternal grandfather died when I was two, but from what I've heard of him, I'm almost 100% sure he had AS too.

My point is, I don't need to be fixed. I'm not broken. Different, maybe, but not broken.
