Here's my LBN post for the day, I'm sure it'll sink fast. This is unbelievable. :(

So-Cal Nuclear Generating Unit Out; California ISO Urging Conservation in San Diego

FOLSOM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 2004--The California Independent System Operator (California ISO) is urging electric customers in San Diego to reduce their energy usage all day today, especially through the peak hours of 5:00-8:00 p.m. after one unit of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (1,100 megawatts) tripped off-line suddenly just after 8:00 this morning.

The ISO is ordering other power plants in Southern California to "ramp up" to be available to produce power to meet the peak demand this afternoon and evening. It appears that there will be enough power to serve the expected demand in the San Diego region, however, the loss of 1,100 megawatts of in-state generation puts additional stress on transmission lines that move power from Arizona and Nevada into California.

If there is another loss of generation or transmission facilities in the same area, it might be necessary to take additional steps. The ISO is coordinating closely with San Diego Gas and Electric and other entities to manage this contingency.

The California ISO is a not-for-profit public benefit corporation charged with managing the flow of electricity along California's open-market wholesale power grid. The mission of the California ISO is to safeguard the reliable delivery of electricity, and ensure equal access to a 25,000 circuit miles of "electron highway". As the impartial operator of the wholesale power grid in the state, the California ISO conducts a small portion of the bulk power markets. These markets are used to allocate space on the transmission lines, maintain operating reserves and match supply with demand in real time.
