Of course, these are ALL arguable, but they are some of the most important milestones to me.

1. Louis Armstrong born, 1901

2. Miles Davis meets Charlie Parker, around 1944

3. Coltrane releases Giant Steps, 1960

4. Brubeck release time out, 1959

5. A Great Day in Harlem photo taken by Art Kane, 1958

More than any other single recording, that one broke out of the melodic restriction and into what "playing over changes" is all about.
