As I was driving home from work tonight
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 11:56 PM by Greylyn58
a song by Bruce Hornsby and the Range came on the radio, one that I had not heard in awhile. From the minute it began, thoughts of John Edwards flooded my mind. What struck me is I've heard this song so many times, but tonight the lyrics touched me in a way it never had before. As the song says "some things will never change" and I became sad all over again because John could have corrected so many of the wrongs that have been wrought over the last 7 yrs.

That's the Way It Is

Standing in line marking time, waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by as he catches the poor ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says "get a job"

chorus
That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
Ah, but don't you believe them

They say hey little boy you can't go where the others go
'Cause you don't look like they do
Said hey old man how can you stand to think that way
Did you really think about it before you made the rules
He said, Son

chorus
That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
Ah, but don't you believe them

solo

Well they passed a law in '64 to give those who ain't got a little more
But it only goes so far
Because the law don't change another's mind when all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar

chorus

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
Ah, but don't you believe them

Damn!! The chance this country is throwing away because they want to make history rather than fix our ills still makes me sick. I thought about posting this in GD-P, but didn't feel like being attacked. So this is for those of us here who understand.

1. The only change we can expect from the two remaining candidates is in the color or the plumbing.
Once again, average people will get kicked to the curb. What's really sad is many of them will have voted for it. The only change we're gonna get is spare change.

3. So very true...
As I was listening to the song it struck me how relevant the lyrics are in context to what is happening now in this country.

Some things will never change....

5. That's a great song.
Thanks for posting that. I've been wondering what other Edwardians were listening to these days. I tend to turn to music when I'm feeling sad and confused.

Lately, I've been playing the soundtrack from Into the Wild by Eddie Vedder. It doesn't really speak to the election stuff but it's definitely where my head is right now. I love the song "Guaranteed" (link to Youtube in my sig) and have been listening to it over and over. Today I got kind of hooked on another song from that cd-"Society."

It's a mistery to me
we have a greed
with which we have agreed

You think you have to want
more than you need
until you have it all you won't be free

society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me

When you want more than you have
you think you need
and when you think more than you want
your thoughts begin to bleed

I think I need to find a bigger place
'cos when you have more than you think
you need more space

society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

there are those thinking more or less that less is more
but if less is more how are you keeping score?
Means for every point you make
your level drops
kinda like its starting from the top
you can't do that...

society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

society, have mercy on me
I hope you're not angry if I disagree
society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

6. That song came on the radio several weeks ago
and I immediately thought how relevant it still was (which is tragic), and at the time I was filled with hope by the Edwards campaign that maybe some of this was finally going to change.

It's heartbreaking.

Still, I find myself getting a little bit of an election buzz about voting tomorrow (albeit bittersweet). Even though I know we cannot nominate him, it will still make me feel good to cast my vote for him, and to know that there are so many others who will be doing it along with me.

7. once again, the people vote against their own best interests
good grief! what does it take to get through to people?

the people will get exactly the government they deserve ... disfunctional at best. while they bray & brag about his black skin or her indoor plumbing, how many more than 47 million will be in poverty 4 years from now? how many will have any sort of healthcare 4 years from now? how many more of our service people will kill themselves because they can't live with what they've been forced to do? or how many of our service people will be living on the streets? begging for crusts of bread? begging for someone to CARE. how many more?

8. This ones been doing it for me...
Steppenwolf - Monster/Suicide/America...almost 30 years later it still fits. So sad.

(Monster)
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has it's share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

(Suicide)
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

(America)
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
