Do you shop or sell on ebay...? Please check this out and report !

If so (or even if not) please have a peek at this:

If you are "concerned", ebay does have an offensive material policy. If members state they find materials that they are allowing for the sake of historical value objective, they claim they will pull it (if I'm reading their policy correctly).

Here's the listing:
http://cgi3.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=cajunokie

Ebay's policy:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/offensive.html

Details here:
Racially or Ethnically Offensive Historical Items and Reproductions

Accordingly, listings that are racially or ethnically offensive are not permitted on eBay. eBay and its community of users will not tolerate such material.

Occasionally, there may be listings of antiques or historical pieces (often referred to as ’Black Americana‘) that, while unacceptable in today's society, are relics of an era where racially inappropriate and insensitive products were widely available. While these items are offensive to eBay and its community, eBay recognizes that such historical items find their way into museums and private collections, and serve as important tools for education about the past.

eBay permits such listings of historical pieces, but at the request of community members, eBay will not permit listings of racial or ethnically inappropriate reproductions.

Further, when selling potentially offensive yet true historical pieces, sellers must ensure that the language in their listings shows appropriate sensitivity to those in the community that might view it. For example, sellers may not use offensive words and phrases such as ’J**‘ or ’N*****‘ in the title or description of their listing, even if that word is part of the proper name or trademark of the item. Sellers may, however, display an image of such historical items within their listing even if the offensive word is plainly visible within the historical item.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please report this. This is NOT cool. I don't care that this woman is saying she thinks these items are cute and sweet. They are ugly and inappropriate. If she wants to sell this shit, she can pay to set up a website AWAY from ebay and sell it. I won't like it, but won't protest it, as it's not on a public forum that caters to the entire community.

Hope that others will help with this. I'm not posting in GD because I'm not in the mood for haters telling me what I should or should not find objectional.

Thanks!

bliss_e. :)

2. That was the first one I clicked on.

Yuck! Nothing historically redeeming about that. At all.

Once when I was browsing antique photographs, I came across a section that dealt with postcards of lynchings from the Jim Crow South. Apparently people once sent them as greetings to their friends and family. Truly upsetting to see, but those are historically relevant even if they are extremely vile. Also expensive, only a serious collector could afford them.

edit: there? their? one of those......

4. I've heard of those....
...:scared: makes me shudder.

I did hear of some people of color actually collecting them, for the sole purpose of putting the items in in museums.

I agree, there's nothing historically redeeming about child rape, coon cards or much of the other stuff she's offering. She's also created her own mammy artwork, that uses "broken english" so to speak. Really disgusting. I'm sorry I don't get how a caucasian woman can claim respect and admiration, while showing someone as a stereotype--a light that's generally been banned from public use. What exactly about that is 'respectful'?

5. I dunno either.
Ignorant? Stupid? In denial? Those are hurtful representations, not respectful. Clue eBay in, see if they get pulled.

...and I will be following up on it, Monday. If they are NOT pulled, I'll be back here to let everyone here know (and calling for a boycott on ebay).

I'll also send a media blast to any and everyone I can about it. In light of Imus, I doubt this will fare well for ebay. They don't carry items that promote any sort of violence or that glorify tragic events (ie. Nazi memorabilia). Slavery was denigrating to black Americans and this is an obvious remnant of that tragic event. This person and ebay should not be earning money on the suffering of human beings.

3. How to contact ebay about this...
Find a link on their pages that says Contact customer service. There you can enter your e-mail address and type in a concern to be sent it.

Also, you can click on ANY of this person's merchandise and do the following:

1. Scroll down to the bottom of the auction's page.
2. Look for the link that says, "Report this item."
3. Click on that link.
4. You'll be taken to a page that says,"Contact Us - Listing Violations."
5. On this page, step 1. is to select a subtopic...in this case, the appropriate one would probably be "Prohibited-banned items."
6. When you click on that, it will give you step 2. Here, click on Offensive and Potentially offensive items or Other prohibited banned items.
7. Then it provides step 3. select another subtopic... and then click on e-mail.

All it allows you to do is send in the number of the item you are reporting. Which is why I also contacted customer service, through the link above. If you are also interested in contacting them about this by phone, let me know. I found a phone number through google and will call on Monday.

7. In an effort to make it easy for you
you can also cut and paste this very LONG address into your browser window and use the form provided. Just remember to cut and paste the link from my op into the body of the message so they know who and what you are referring to.

8. Here are some quotes directly from her ebay site.
I began painting in the early 70's when my husband bought me a painting kit as a gift. In 1988, I opened an Art studio and soon began giving painting classes. Scenes of the cajun country, cottonfields, outhouses, old shacks ... things that brought back memories were the things my students enjoyed the most. So I created these type scenes for the class to paint. From those original paintings, I designed painting patterns for the new students and others who came into my studio. We had a lot of fun and the students were amazed at how learning basic techniques could produce such a beautiful work of art!

<snip>

The black folk art paintings came about through my interest in Southern history. The scenes I paint reflect the way things were, but hopefully in a joyful way ... not dwelling on the past negatively, but promoting the feeling of love, families working and playing together, and enjoying life even though times were rough.

<snip>

Mammy has become like a real person to me with a distinct personality.
She's loving and caring, cute and funny ... full of wisdom and common sense ... a woman to be respected. But she's not a floor mat for anyone!

But just in case you thought she is a racist...

So, just who is this little artist?

This is our artist, representing Black American culture the way it use to be... with a happy face planted firmly on it... and dilusions...

She may not wear white sheets and hoods, but I bet she knows how to get her whites extra bright in the laundry! :sarcasm:
