No promotion tests on deployment
No promotion tests on deployment

Airmen on year-long Central Command assignments to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom will no longer be able to take promotions tests while they are deployed.

Instead, airmen will either have to take the tests before they leave or wait until after they return, the Air Force announced Jan. 18. About 1,600 officers and enlisted airmen are one one-year tours.

Testing airmen in the combat zones “reduces mission focus and increases our footprint because it requires secure testing facilities, test proctors and test control officers,” Lt. Col. Scott Brady, chief of Air Force promotions and evaluations policy at the Pentagon, said in a press release “We also had to consider that many airmen have to travel to the test site, putting more airmen on the road and in harm’s way.”

Airmen will test before deploying if their testing cycle is ongoing.

If they are deployed during the testing cycle, airmen will have 60 days to study upon their return and then take the test. Airmen selected for promotion will receive back-pay and benefits based on their original date of rank, Brady said.
