FORT DRUM, N.Y. — A 10th Mountain Division soldier killed by a military policeman after holding two other military police officers at gunpoint had no record of mental health issues, according to Army officials.

Staff Sgt. Dustin McMillen was fatally wounded during the standoff early Saturday morning on the northern New York Army post.

McMillen, 29, of Vancouver, Ore., was an infantryman who served a combat tour of more than a year in Afghanistan, returning home last June. He joined the Army in 1998.

Lt. Col. Paul Swiergosz, a 10th Mountain Division spokesman, said Army officials could find no record that McMillen requested or was referred to counseling for any battle-related illness or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“This has been a terrible tragedy for everyone concerned and our primary concern right now is to take care of the physical and emotional needs of his family as well as those of the officers involved in (the) shooting,” Swiergosz said during a news conference Sunday.

1. Oh, man....
but then (from the article):

Officials say Staff Sgt. Dustin McMillen and his wife were at the house. They say McMillen subdued the two officers with a weapon, and then a second civilian officer arrived and heard a gunshot from inside the house.

Officials say that officer heard another shot after speaking with McMillen, then entered the house and shot the 29-year-old soldier several times.

McMillen was taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where he was pronounced dead.

I hate shit like this.
