WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune is holding public meetings to discuss the increased training at the base.

The Jacksonville Daily News reports the base expects an increase in small arms and artillery training, more helicopter missions and more bombing runs by jet fighters at Brown’s Island. The increases come as the Marine Corps expands to 220,000 Marines. The training tempo is not expected to increase until 2011.

The first meeting was held Monday in Sneads Ferry, and two more are scheduled at East Carteret High School and Havelock. The Marines are preparing an environmental assessment to determine the impact on the region. The public can comment on the plan until July 7.
