E-3 accused of stabbing fellow sailor

NORFOLK, Va. — A sailor who has been in confinement for 18 months will face an attempted murder charge at an Article 32 hearing Wednesday morning, according to the Navy.

The charge sheet against the seaman alleges that he tried to kill, with “premeditation,” a fellow sailor “by means of cutting and stabbing him with a knife.” His name was redacted from the charge sheet.

The defendant has been in confinement since March 2007 and is assigned to the cruiser Cape St. George. It was unclear as of Tuesday evening whether such a long pre-hearing confinement is common in such cases.

The proceeding is expected to last two days.

The Cape St. George used to be homeported in Norfolk, Va., but has since switched its homeport to San Diego, said Paul Taylor, a spokesman at Naval Surface Force Atlantic.
