It was disclosed yesterday that Barracks intended to house wounded soldiers at Fort Sill, Okla., have become infested with mold. These are the latest in substandard conditions that welcome our wounded troops. Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Meade, Md., and Walter Reed Army Medical Center have all been in the news in the last couple of years for the poor conditions, which house our brave soldiers and Marines.
These conditions exist despite all the feel-good publicity tours those in the highest offices have made. These are the same people who “support our troops” and send them back for multiple deployments. These are the same people who claim the “surge is working,” while the death toll is at 4,143, and the wounded (who stay in these barracks) has exceeded 40,000 troops. These are the same people who insist we “stay the course,” while National Guard and reserve families are losing their homes and their jobs in record numbers. These are the same people who, not satisfied with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, are now saber-rattling in Russia and Iran.
It is time for America to really “support our troops.” Barack Obama’s plan for a sensible withdrawal from Iraq, increased presence in Afghanistan and increased reimbursement/benefits for National Guard, reservists and veterans is in the best interest of our nation. We owe those defending our country the best care possible when they return from war. Our record so far is shameful.
