FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A military judge has decided to wait until next year to consider the case of a soldier accused of killing a paratrooper and wounding 18 others during a 1995 shooting rampage at Fort Bragg.

After reviewing motions for Wednesday’s hearing, Col. Patrick Parrish decided to reconvene in January 2009 to hear the case of Sgt. William J. Kreutzer Jr. He is accused shooting into Towle Stadium as 1,300 soldiers gathered for a morning run.

Kreutzer was sentenced to death in 1996 at a court-martial, but a military appeals court overturned the sentence after deciding his defense lawyers were ineffective.

Parrish said he wanted to hold the hearing after the scheduled court-martial of Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez, who is accused of killing two senior officers in Iraq in 2005.
