BAGHDAD — A U.S. soldier was killed in Iraq on Monday, the military said.

The soldier came under small-arms fire during a patrol Monday afternoon in northern Baghdad, said Lt. Col. Steven Stover, a military spokesman.

Stover said the soldier’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our fallen comrade’s family,” he said. “We are a brotherhood and a sisterhood forged by conflict and each of us feels deeply when another falls.”

The death raises to at least 4,175 members of the U.S. military who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003. That is according to an Associated Press count.
