An emergency landing of a B-1B Lancer resulted in a brake fire and more than $1 million in damage to bomber, according to Air Force reports.
The B-1B, assigned to the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., was on a training mission Sept. 12, when an electrical problem prompted the crew to declare an in-flight emergency. After spending more than an hour burning off fuel, the jet touched down at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.
When the jet landed, smoke was spotted coming from the bomber’s main landing gear, usually a sign that a tire or hydraulic fluid caught fire.
While investigations into the accident continue, estimates of the repair bill put the cost at more $1 million.
The incident is the third B-1B accident in fiscal 2008 that will cost more than $1 million to repair.
